Bayard NE is known for many things, but producing artists is not one of them, according to Schiavone’s secondary school art teacher Jessica Scott. This can have a dampening effect on the ambitions and confidence of young art students like Theresa, says Scott. But those realities haven’t stopped Schiavone from creating art or receiving recognition for it.

“You accidentally show bits and pieces of what is realistically going on around you, that can’t be changed by any historian’s opinion,” Schiavone said. “It’s happening in my age and I’m here to see it firsthand.”
